Of late, criminals are increasingly adopting the modus operandi of posing as a courier, mechanic, messenger, visitor etc. to gain entry into houses to commit crime. The gullible people at home, mostly women, unwittingly open the door to deal with the caller. Do not open door to 'Godmen' even if they seem to tell your present and past just by seeing your face as most of the times such people are just imposters. Opening door without the door lock chain in place is enough for criminals to force entry into the house to commit robbery and even murder. There are many tricks employed by tricksters to gain entry, though not everyone is crook and not everyone is out to dupe you but if you are aware of the usual tricks then you can be careful in dealing with situations. Your common sense is your best weapon in these cases though it is best not to get involved in such situations. Even at cost of being viewed as insensitive or even downright rude, it is better not to open door to the stranger. The usual ploys to gain entry are: • Delivery by a courier • Delivery of parcel from the husband's office • A near and dear is involved in an accident and has asked the stranger to fetch you • A glass of water • Electricity meter reader • Mechanic to repair your water purifier, clean cooking gas, vaccum cleaner etc. • Sadhu's(Godmen) claiming to have super-natural powers. Normally such people will also make some prediction or tell you something about your past to gain confidence. The predictions would always be very positive and tempt you to ask for more. The usual modus-operandi is to ask for something insignificant to gain confidence or just to start conversation. Some of them are known to give small gifts (a blessed ring, bracelet etc.) just to start the conversation. |
