Write down all essential particulars of your passport neatly along with address of the place of your stay abroad and keep it handy and separate from your passport. Whenever immigration and other forms are to be filled at the airport or during the journey, use this paper for passport details. This way you do not have to take out your passport every time you need such details as doing so increases the chances of its loss or misplacement.
Always keep a copy of the Passport and the visas to the countries you are visiting and any other valid visas that you may have in your passport. In case of loss of passport these copies will be very handy. The copies must be stored in a separate place than where the originals are. It is also a good idea to leave a copy of such documents at your home. Please note that the copies are no substitute of an original and will help in only getting the duplicate made.
Keep your passport, air ticket and other important travel documents safely and securely. It is desirable to keep these documents on your person rather than in brief case or any other hand bag. Putting them in a pouch and tying the pouch on your waist or tucking it under your shirt or coat is considered quite safe.
Ensure that you collect back your passport and travel documents after check in at the airlines and immigration counters. Restore them back to the place of safety as suggested above immediately. Do not keep holding them in your hands unnecessarily or place them elsewhere temporarily, as you are likely to lose them this way.
If you are carrying these documents in a hand held pouch or a brief case, ensure that you do not keep it on duty free shops counters, restaurants tables or sofa/chair of the waiting lounge as you are likely to leave them behind while moving away in a hurry.
If you lose your passport, inform the local police and your embassy/High Commission about it without any undue loss of time. Embassy should also be requested to issue you a duplicate passport. Passport details kept separately as suggested earlier will come handy now in this situation.
