•  You might be embarrassed to bring up Security topic with the neighbor but will be surprised to find them more eager to discuss the same. This is very relevant in the posh localities where neighbors may not know each other. Maybe you need to make a beginning or bring up the subject in your Resident Welfare association.
•  Neighbors are in a position to detect an abnormal situation as also to come to the rescue of each other at the earliest, much before a friend or relative and even police can come to help. It is therefore very essential to make specific mutual arrangements with your friendly and trustworthy neighbors to prevent, detect and help in any untoward happening e.g. physical assault, house break-in, fire, flooding, water leakage, tinkering with electric/water meters and motor pumps etc.
•  Neighbors can keep watch on each others houses specially when the occupants are temporarily away or there are old persons/children alone at home. Police, in many cities has promoted Neighborhood Watch scheme.
•  Neighbors can have Neighbourhood electric bells, Panic alarms installed in each others houses to alert each other in case of emergency. If installed, these systems should be tested from time to time to ensure that these are in working order. This is extremely important in case of Wired systems as compared to wireless systems.
•  Neighbors must be informed if you and/or your family are moving out and probable date of return. For safety of your house while you are away you may consider recommendations for UNOCCUPIED HOUSES.
•  Duplicate keys, at least of the outer doors, may be kept with a trustworthy neighbor to let you in if you have been locked out. It may be a good idea to seal the keys in an envelope and then hand over the same, so as to avoid any chance of suspicion later.
•  You can even think of storing your computer back ups in the neighbor's house for safety from fire or theft.
