•  Do not wear ostentatious jewelry during train/bus journeys. Nor carry large amount of money. Bank draft or travelers checks are better options. Bulk money should be camouflaged in ordinary and uninviting box or package if there is no other option.
•  Women should avoid getting into a bus or a train compartment that is empty or has very few passengers in it especially at nighttime. Even male passengers should be wary of such a situation. If you have to travel in such a bus, try to sit close to the entrance or exit where you can be seen or shout for help. In a railway compartment, make a mental note of the location of the emergency chain so as to pull it even when it is dark.
•  Keep your baggage in front of you or on the side where it is easily visible all the time. If this is not feasible, then keep an eye on your baggage whenever passengers are leaving the bus or the compartment. If your baggage is kept on the bus roof then check it at every place of halt particularly if the leaving passengers are taking away their baggage.
•  Do not get down at the bus stand/railway station soon after keeping your baggage inside to buy something. The criminals know these well-established habits of the passengers and prey on their baggage with ease.
•  Look under and around your seat for any suspicious objects particularly concealed bombs and explosive devices. Do not handle such objects; report to the authorities.
•  Keep the windows shut while the train is steaming off from a railway station or when it is coming to a halt at a railway station. Chain snatchers are particularly active at this time due to slowing speed of the train.
•  There are tricksters travelling in buses/trains who offer to double your money or jewelry, convert any metal into gold. Do not get involved with them howsoever attractive their offer may appear to be.
•  Be very careful of your wallet or purse when getting into or out of a bus/train. Hip/Back pocket is no place for the wallet at such junctures. Be very watchful of your baggage when waiting for the bus/train. Never leave it unattended
