•  Under the Indian Arms Act, possession of a firearm without a valid license is a criminal offence. Make sure that you are in possession of a valid license all through the period that you keep a firearm.
•  Remember that the person who holds a license is not entitled to transfer the possession of the firearm or the ammunition to any one except a retainer whose name has been entered in the license.
•  Every license has a prescribed period of validity. On expiry of this period, the possession of the firearm becomes a criminal offence, as the expired license is no more valid. Ensure that you get your Arms license renewed within the prescribed period of time.
•  If there is any change of address or in the retainer that is entered in the license or in any other particulars of the licensee or the firearm, the same should be got incorporated in the license.
•  In case of the demise of the licensee, the firearm should be deposited with the licensing authority or under his orders with the police. Similarly, if the licensee is no longer in a position to use the firearm due to disability or incapacitation, this fact should be brought to the notice of the licensing authority and the firearm deposited under his orders.
•  A license issued for a firearm specifies the type and quantity of ammunition which the licensee is permitted to hold with the firearm. Make sure that you do not possess any ammunition other than the one specified in the license and that you do not exceed the prescribed quantity. Violation of this rule is a criminal offence.
