•  Employee screening is the basic step particularly in stores that are entirely operated by employees.  Employee screening is necessary not only at the selection or employment stage but periodically thereafter. This task comprises discreet inquiries about the activities of the employee after or before the duty hours; whether his living standard and lifestyle is commensurate with his known sources of income; what type of friends and contacts does he keep etc. An employer can do this with his own resources or through private detective agencies.
•  Employees should be sensitized about the losses due to pilferage and theft and alerted to keep an eye on the customers.
•  Costly items should be kept out of the reach of the customers and should be shown to them on demand under your own control. These should not lie about unnecessarily and should be placed back when not required.
•  Stray customers with handbags or with already purchased merchandise should be discreetly kept under close watch till their departure.
•  It has become quite an established practice to request the customers not to carry handbags or shopping bags into the shop. In such an event, security arrangements for handling the bags of the customers should be made.
•  Customers carrying purchased goods out of the shop should be invariably checked for receipt while the contents of the bags may be checked as per the receipt at random.
•  Use of appropriate technologies such as CCTV cameras and PC based Surveillance Systems can be very effective deterrent to the shoplifters.
•  Use of barcodes also helps keeping quick check on inventory thereby highlighting any shop-lifting that may be happening. Depending upon the items that are being shop-lifted a suitable counter-measure can be taken.
•  Use of Electronic identification tags coupled with Anti-shop lifting systems are an ideal solution though the cost of such solution is high.
