India is shoppers' paradise and is considered comparatively cheaper.
Prices are quite competitive but there is a general tendency to inflate the price to take advantage of a foreign visitor's lack of knowledge of local prices. Sub-standard items are palmed off for the price of high quality stuff. Some of the pavement based vendors would agree for a 50-75% reduction in price. Usually the larger shops or company showrooms have fixed rates.
If possible, take the help of a local and knowledgeable person while on the shopping spree.
The best way out is to shop at government or large and well organized stores. There are usually no such mal practices at such places. Prices are fixed and uniform for every one and there is no cheating on quality. Generally the prices are displayed on the items for every one to see. Such stores are located in all big cities and other places of tourist interests.
Avoid giving part payment in advance for purchase of an item. However if it becomes necessary, do so against proper receipt and do not accept a delivery schedule too close to your time of departure. You would become helpless if there were delay in or failure of delivery.
Insist on taking a proper receipt of the payment made by you and retain it as long as convenient. If you are happy with the shopping, the receipt can help you in giving reference to other visitors.
Indian airports (international only) offer the facility of duty free shops (DFS) at the arrival lounge also.
Avoid buying wonder drugs from road side quacks that are in abundance, specially, in and around places of worship
