Remember: A house, which is temporarily unoccupied, is more vulnerable to day or night burglary than the one that is occupied and the severity of loss is also much more since the intruders have all the time that they need to go through the house from corner to corner. Steps required before leaving the house for short/long duration • An intruder alarm is one of the easiest precaution against break-in, since they warn the neighbors or passer-by in case of an intrusion. Such alarms are low cost and a good investment. • Do not hang out a notice outside announcing your absence from the house. • The absence from the house must be known to minimum number of people. • If possible, intimate the post man/office to hold delivery of mail or redirect it to another address. Alternatively ask someone to clear your letterbox of the mail daily or frequently. • Stop the newspaper/magazine delivery. Alternatively, if the place where the newspapers land, is not visible from outside, then it may be advisable to let the delivery happen so that you do not have to tell the delivery boy even, that you are not going to be home. • If you have a lawn, mow it enough to last for the period of your absence or make arrangements for mowing/clearing it regularly during your absence, as if you were there. |
