On the telephone line the information is exchanged between two parties as voice or as data (fax). If someone can tap the telephone line from the pole or from anywhere between the telephone and the exchange, then he can listen to the conversation. It is also feasible that a fax can be sent to a wrong number or it might get tapped along the line.

There was an incident in which the Prime Minister of India’s travel plan (which is a very sensitive document) was inadvertently faxed to a resident of New Delhi .

To avoid such an eventuality the scramblers are used. The voice scramblers ensure that only those parties can talk to each other who have ‘paired’ scrambler attached to their telephones. For using a scrambler, a secret code has to be set, so that only the intended party can listen to the conversation and even if someone else has the scrambler but does not know the code, he would not be able to listen to the conversation.

If someone tapes or tries to listen to the conversation from the telephone pole he will only hear strange sounds like that of a fax transmission. Scramblers are recommended for very high security conversation and specially in enforcement/defense agencies.

The fax scramblers also work like voice scramblers except the fax scrambler secures the fax transmission be

These devices are used on the normal telephone line to identify from where the telephone call was made. In case there is threatening call or a obscene call then using such a device it can be seen from where the call originated. Most of the enforcement agencies today are equipped with such devices. Such devices are not expensive. It may be noted that for such a device to be useful this facility must be available in the local exchange. It may also be noted that some times this type of devices are unable to display the originating number under certain circumstances.

These days there are plenty of phones available with Caller-Id feature inbuilt, specially in the grey market. Even fax machines are having this feature as a standard.

This is an equipment for the detection of eavesdropping devices on the telephone line.

Normally the telephone line-hooked listening devices are the most difficult to detect as these devices can be planted anywhere on the target line and majority of such installations will be outside the target premises and quite often some distance away.

Moreover, any professionally well made devices, though electrically connected to the telephone line, may not appreciably alter the electrical characteristics of the line, thus making its detection difficult. Also such devices are not easily recognizable in physical appearance.

Therefore using the instrument calls for good deal of expertise and knowledge of functioning characteristics of the telephone instrument and the telephone exchange of the locality. The currently available instruments can perform quick tests on single line and every wire combination of multiple lines also if needed.

Telephone bugs are planted for the purposes of listening to either the telephone conversation or the room conversations.

This device is meant for detection and location of any passive electronic circuits incorporating transistors and diodes, whether active or passive. It is portable and simple to use with adjustable range of control and it caters to a wide variety of applications. It is an ideal complement to radio and cable countermeasures. It has been designed to quickly and effectively search for buried or hidden electronic device whether the device is in operation or not. This capability makes this instrument an invaluable tool for electronic countermeasure operations.

All bugs i.e., radio transmitters, receivers, power amplified microphones, electronic timers and similar equipment used in clandestine operations, contain semi-conductors and therefore are open to discovery with the use of the this detector. Bugs can be planted anywhere – buried in the wall, left in the flower vase, left behiend pillows, planted behiend curtains, planted in a showpiece, enclosed within the furniture or any other item in the room and could be in the most unlikely of the places. Planting of a bug is normally carried out by experts and therefore it is difficult to guess the location or the type of the planted device. In using the non-linear detector, one therefore has to go about the job of scanning every inch of space using the probe patiently and methodically without omitting anything and any place in the room. If any hidden semiconductor component is detected, the instrument will emit an audio alarm and with adjustment of sensitivity, it is possible to pin point the exact location.

This is a handy device in detecting active bugs. The device is slowly passed all over the room including the walls, all the furniture and all possible hiding places within the room. Some of bug detectors have a signal strength meter, whose reading increases as bug gets closer or some incorporate Acoustic (sound) feedback. On getting closer to the bug the alarm gets more shrill.

It must be remembered that since this device detects only live bugs, its use will be effective just before the meeting / conference takes place or even during the meeting as the bug, if any, is sure to become active at this time. As the name suggests, if the bug is not active at the time of scanning then this device gives false results.

Security is being free from danger. The term can be used with reference to crime, accidents of all kinds, etc. Security is a vast topic including security of countries against terrorist attack, security of computers against hackers, home security against burglars and other intruders, financial security against economic collapse and many other related situations.

Security is the condition of being protected against danger or loss. In the general sense, security is a concept similar to safety. The nuance between the two is an added emphasis on being protected from dangers that originate from outside. Individuals or actions that encroach upon the condition of protection are responsible for the breach of security.

Security has to be compared and contrasted with other related concepts: Safety , continuity , reliability . The key difference between security and reliability is that security must take into account the actions of active malicious agents attempting to cause destruction.

Factors that must be considered befor buing an security device are:

1. Reliability

2. Effectiveness

3. Price

4. Maintenance

5. Ease of use (workability, i.e. security tag remover)
